Bottom Line

Questions Carriers Ask

What is ELDT and why does it matter when I hire a new CDL driver?

Entry Level Driver Training is the federal training floor FMCSA finalized in 2022, backed by the Training Provider Registry that is supposed to keep schools accountable. Every new CDL holder you hire should have come through a registered provider. If the school was not legitimate, that hire can become a compliance problem for you.

Why is FMCSA cracking down on training providers now?

The agency spent the back half of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 auditing registry-listed schools and removing the ones that fail curriculum, instructor, or recordkeeping requirements. The practical effect is that a training certificate no longer proves much on its own. You have to look behind the stamp before you put a new driver in a truck.

How do I protect myself when hiring drivers fresh out of school?

Verify the school and the training record as part of your hiring workflow rather than taking the certificate at face value. Build your own mentor and onboarding layer so new hires are not learning on your customers freight alone. Insurance underwriters are starting to ask about exactly this, so it pays twice.
